This is not to say that there aren’t any outstanding Lord of the Rings video games available. I recall that some of my favourite GameCube movie tie-ins when I was younger, and I spent an entire summer in college playing the MMO. The two most recent adaptations, Middle-earth: Shadow of War (2017) and Shadow of Mordor (2014), do allow you to explore a number of iconic movie locations in incredibly detailed fashion for the time, but you’re so busy decapitating orcs in those games that you don’t really have time to appreciate your surroundings.

We get to explore some of the most iconic settings from the books and movies, including Hobbiton, Rivendell, and the Tower of Mordor, in this compilation of fan-made concept trailers created in Unreal Engine 5. Just a shame it’s not real. Each artist featured in the montage is listed in the YouTube description, but suffice it to say that none of them holds the franchise licence, so they are unlikely to release any playable content anytime soon.

While we wait for The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, Daedalic’s stealth-focused adaptation, which was recently delayed beyond its planned September launch by “a few months,” it is still a true treat to see such a beautiful recreation of Tolkien’s universe.
