The Godslayer Greatsword in Elden Ring is a massive spiraled sword that can imbue itself with black flames, and it is one of Elden Ring’s most legendary weapons. It looks a lot like the Onyx Blade from Dark Souls 3’s Ashes of Ariandel DLC, and it even has the same animation, where your character swoops the sword down to encircle it in dark and deadly flames.
Though not as difficult to obtain as the Ruin Greatsword or the Golden Order Greatsword, this weapon still necessitates traveling to a secret location, navigating your way through it, and fighting an Elden Ring boss who can be difficult to defeat alone.
If you want to get your hands on this legendary Elden Ring weapon, continue reading as I show you where it is and how to defeat the dreaded Godskin Apostle boss who guards it.
How To Get Godslayer Greatsword in Elden Ring
These four steps should be followed:
- Arriving at Divine Tower of Caelid
- Finding the Site of Lost Grace
- Boss Arena Location
- Godskin Apostle Boss Battle
Details of each step:
1. Arriving at Divine Tower of Caelid
The Godslayer Greatsword can be found in the basement of Caelid’s Divine Tower, near the Dragonbarrow West site of grace, in the northern part of Caelid. Prepare for the kind of “is that where I’m supposed to jump next?” platforming usually reserved for a Destiny raid as you climb up the tower to an entrance, then back down once inside. I did this mini-dungeon when I was level 90, and I wouldn’t recommend doing it until you’re at least level 70.

Two ladders can be seen extending from the mainland to the tower, one of which has an enemy next to it. To avoid falling off, it’s best to deal with opponents at a distance. Climb up the lower of the two ladders by following the root to the outcropping on the tower.
Do not immediately climb the second ladder after the first. Instead, double jump across the gap in the arched path to the right with Torrent. Instead, climb the ladder at the end of this path.

2. Finding the Site of Lost Grace
From the top of the ladder, turn left and follow the path around the tower. To cross any gaps, use Torrent’s double jump, but be cautious as there are a few that are difficult to see coming. At the end of the path, you’ll come across a place of grace.

The Radahn’s Great Rune activation point is located north of the site of grace. Turn south and descend the stairs to find the Godslayer’s Greatsword. At the bottom, there are two Redmane soldiers, one hidden around the corner.
The old “drop from ledge to ledge making your way to the bottom of a great pit” set-piece follows, which is almost as iconic as Miyazaki’s love of poison swamps. (See also the Hunter’s Workshop, Majula, and the Great Hollow.) The path is fairly straightforward: your first goal is the cage elevator, which is down and to the left of your starting point and is guarded by a Redmane soldier. The cracked strut in your path will break under your weight, but because it’s a scripted event, you won’t be hurt, and this is the path you should take.

Take the elevator to the top and walk back around the tower on the curving hallway. Take a shortcut back to the last site of grace by taking a detour up the ladder and opening the door at the top. A black flame monk with plenty of poise and damaging incantations can be found further down the corridor, but he shouldn’t be a major threat.
3. Boss Arena Location
Jump out on the ledge to your left at the end of the hall and follow the curve around the tower until you’re directly above another cracked strut. It will break, and you are scripted to survive—there is no other way down the tower—but I had this one glitch out, and the fall killed me twice before doing no damage the third time. If this happens, keep returning via the shortcut and attempting the jump until you reach the elevator safely.
4. Godskin Apostle Boss Battle
Ride it down to another site of grace, and you’ll find the boss door to the Godskin Apostle past another black flame monk.

Most of the Apostle’s attacks are fairly predictable, so getting into his rhythm shouldn’t take too long. One attack that stuck with me was when he spins his blade in front of him like an industrial fan, holds it there, and walks forward for massive damage. During this attack, I never managed to get behind him, and it’s safer to keep your distance until it’s over. When you attempt to drink from your flask, the Godskin Apostle will hurl a black flame projectile at you.

Fighting the Godskin Apostle
His second phase will feature some Reed Richards stretchy antics, but they won’t add as much variety to the fight as, say, Margit’s phase 2 moves. You’ll get the Godskin Apostle’s nasty-looking armor after defeating him, and the Godslayer’s Greatsword is in a chest in the next room.
What can you do with Godslayer Greatsword in Elden Ring?
“The Queen’s Black Flame,” a two-hit combo of charged black flame attacks, is The Godslayer’s Greatsword’s ashes of war. It has the following requirements:

• Strength: To wield the Godslayer’s Greatsword one-handed, you’ll need 20 Str, and 14 to wield it two-handed. Strangely enough for a Colossal Sword in this game, Godslayer’s Greatsword only has D scaling in Strength.
• Dexterity: You’ll need 22 Dex, with the sword’s D scaling improving to C at +2, and B at +10 with the D scaling.
• Faith: It takes 20 Faith to wield Godslayer’s Greatsword, with D scaling improving to C at +7.
• Endurance: While the Godslayer’s Greatsword is lighter than other Colossal Swords, it still requires a significant amount of Endurance to complete the full combo and fast roll with it and heavier armor equipped.
