To recoup its $90 million price tag, the animated movie about Superman’s dog still has a ways to go. Here is the DC League of Super-Pets review.
With $23 million in ticket sales, DC League of Super-Pets defeated Jordan Peele’s Nope to win the domestic weekend box office.
DC League of Super-Pets, which stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Superman’s dog Krypto and Kevin Hart as Ace and other pets to rescue superheroes who have been captured by Lex Luthor, earned an additional $18.4 million internationally, according to Variety, bringing its total to $41.4 million worldwide.
The animated adventure needs to earn back its $90 million investment before it can catch up to the $51 million and $107 million debuts of other animated films like Lightyear and Minions: The Rise of Gru. It did, however, perform on a par with Encanto’s $27 million, $22.3 million, and $23.9 million for Sing 2 and The Bad Guys.
In our review of DC League of Super-Pets, we stated that “It may have thoughtful filmmaking on its side, but it lacks a voice cast that can give its characters life and personality. The movie’s superpowered pets end up getting the short end of the stick because neither their stories are as interesting nor are they ever truly funny outside of a few passing jokes.”
Nope made $18.5 million in its second weekend in theatres, a 58 percent decrease from its first weekend. Nope has not yet made its international debut but has amassed $80.5 million at home.
With $13.1 million in its fourth weekend, Thor: Love and Thunder came in third, assisting the newest MCU movie to reach $300 million in North America and $662 million worldwide.
Minions: The Rise of Gru earned $10.8 million, placing it in fourth place. The most recent Minions film has made $320 million domestically and $710 million internationally through its fifth weekend.
Top Gun: Maverick, which had $8.2 million in its 10th weekend of release, completed the top five. The high-flying adventure, which has made over $650 million domestically and $1.3 billion globally, continues to rule the box office.
In other box office news, Everything Everywhere All At Once has now earned more than $100 million worldwide, making it the first A24 movie to accomplish that feat.
